Blank Reading

Blank Reading by Im Jaehyung is a publication that brings together the artist’s key works since 2019, alongside his essays and critical texts. The design takes as its central direction the interpretation of the artist’s formal language and writing, both of which engage with the theme of loss, while visually extending the classical and mythological imagery, as well as the dark yet sublime tonality that emerges throughout.

Rather than remaining within a purely personal narrative, the book is structured to guide the reader through the artist’s exploration of inner life, memory, and the world that unfolds after loss. To reflect the lyrical narrative and depth of contemplation, the overall flow of the book develops a quiet yet gradual rhythm.
In the body of the book, text and images are designed to function in close interplay. By inserting images within the flow of the essays, readers are able to visually register motifs referenced in the text, such as the surface of the sea or the movement of a flag, in a natural and immediate way. This approach allows the poetic and essayistic qualities of the work to unfold seamlessly within the spatial composition of the book.
