View From Outside

This publication was produced for Soo Hong’s exhibition View from Outside. It brings together documentation of the artist’s installation works, critical essays, and photographs. Her practice is grounded in architectural structures, and this book reflects that approach both in content and form.

The installation consists of two identical rooms symmetrically divided by a single wall, and to translate this spatial condition into a tactile reading experience, the book adopts a Z-binding structure that physically splits it into two sections—one presenting the main installation images with critical texts, and the other featuring photographs of the space taken by the artist.

Soo Hong’s work is characterized by the exposure of raw elements—visible wiring, untreated construction materials, and an emphasis on materiality drawn directly from architectural contexts. This industrial sensibility is equally present in her photographs. To echo this atmosphere, the cover design draws inspiration from the muted, utilitarian colors of folders commonly found in construction site offices. In this way, the book does not merely document the work, but also conveys its material and spatial qualities through design.
